Birds

Birds have evolved to fill a diverse set of niches, and because of their manifold adaptations to different habitats, and the relative ease with which they are detected, they are a great taxon to understand the effects of land use, climate, and other factors on the ability of wild species to maintain viable populations.

Map of habitat heterogeneity across the conterminous U.S., based on 30-m resolution standard deviation texture (21x21 moving window) of NDVI (index of vegetation greenness) from Landsat 8 imagery. Darker green areas indicate regions with higher habitat heterogeneity.

Characterizing habitat heterogeneity using image texture

Dec 2018 - Biodiversity - Birds - Conservation - Remote Sensing

Laura Farwell is using image texture measures as powerful predictors of regional and global biodiversity patterns.

Kirtland’s Warblers call Wisconsin home

Dec 2018 - Birds - Conservation

Ashley Olah is studying habitat selection of Kirtland’s Warblers in commercially owned red pine plantations in central Wisconsin.
